About Munir Eltobgi
Munir Eltobgi believes that his work expresses his immersion in popular culture and religion, adapting new iconographic elements and dynamic Egyptian neoclassic female figures, mythical shapes, as well as spiritual and magical elements in his paintings. His artwork has been influenced by some of the world’s greatest modern neo-impressionism artists including Henri Matisse and Salvador Dali. His greatest influence has been Pablo Picasso’s “Cubist” and “African-influenced” movements in art.
The spiritual, mythical, and magical aspects of life are at the heart of his creation and dreaming. Mr. Eltobgi strives to capture the essence of myth and magic and the spiritual depth that an artistic work is supposed to express.
Munir Eltobgi was born in Port Said, Egypt and traveled to Saudi Arabia before immigrating to the United States in 1967 to study art at the age of twenty-five. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Chicago State University, and has spent years developing and creating his own unique techniques and visions of modern Egyptian artistic style.
Munir’s artworks has been successfully shown at the Chicago State University – Brooks Center; EGG Gallery, Chicago; Sears Tower – Independence Bank of Chicago; Labor Club, Port Said Egypt; and numerous local neighborhood multi-media exhibits and private galleries.
Artist Statement
I completed my first painting in 1971, which was a portrait of my father. Over the next few years, I continued to paint, but it was not until 1975 when I returned to Egypt to give my father his portrait, that I became an artist. Upon returning to my home in Port Said, I revealed his portrait to him. At that moment something special happened because my father rarely ever expressed his emotions. He looked at me and smiled, and I could tell he was pleased by my work. From that moment I had the confidence to call myself an artist.
